Do Animals Know Who Jesus Is?

There is no name greater than the name of Jesus.

The Bible tells us that all things were created through him, in him, and for him. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved. Jesus is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Believers know this, and we honor Jesus for his authority, his holiness, and his power. But did you know that animals know this too? God has made known the name of Jesus among people of the earth, and also throughout the animal kingdom.

"Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:9-11). Scripture tells us that every knee will bow down to him—that includes the "knees" in the animal kingdom, "in heaven and on earth and under the earth." What a joyous fellowship for us believers, when every living thing will at once acknowledge the majesty of Jesus Christ, Lord of All!

This is because the gospel that we are so grateful for was meant for the whole world, which includes animals. The apostle Paul considered himself a servant of the gospel "that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven" (Colossians 1:23).

And one day, we will hear the voices of animals united to our own in praising the sovereignty and worthiness of Jesus Christ: "Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: 'To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!'" (Revelation 5:13)

Jesus is far too wonderful to be praised by man alone. It would take all of creation to adequately worship him. Even if we could manage to keep silent before Jesus, the rocks and the rivers would burst forth in song: "Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the Lord" (Psalm 97:8).

But ask the animals, and they will teach you,

or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you;

or speak to the earth, and it will teach you,

or let the fish in the sea inform you.

Which of all these does not know

that the hand of the Lord has done this?

In his hand is the life of every creature

and the breath of all mankind. (Job 12:7-10)

Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb

be praise and honor and glory and power,

for ever and ever!” (Revelation 5:13)

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place

and gave him the name that is above every name,

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father. (Phillippians 2:9-11)

My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord.

Let every creature praise his holy name

for ever and ever. (Psalm 145:21)

The fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble at my presence. (Ezekiel 38:20)

This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant. (Colossians 1:23)
